Medical Receptionist/Secretary/Clinical Coder
My duties would include being on the front reception desk, greeting patients and help them with their problems face to face, also answering the busy telephones with a high demand and coordinating patients in the right direction depending on their problems and treatments needed, doing this with the highest quality of care, diligence and empathy. Every telephone call is different and some quite complex, this could range from needing a same day appointment due to an acute illness, medication queries, patients finding out results and needing advice for any follow up action, to Hospital referrals and subsequent actions for Primary Care. Other duties here would include liaising with the GPs for the day ahead, phoning up the care homes to arrange the GP visits and putting up the Rota’s on System One for the weeks ahead. I would also call patients who are due to have annual/6 monthly checks and getting them booked in to the allocated practitioner, helping with the monthly stationary orders, and filing (which includes finding patients records and photocopying them for further assessment). Another part of the role was to also top up the prescriptions in the clinical rooms (keeping record of them), documenting a patient’s death and keeping in touch with the Coroners’ office/Funeral directors to ensure everything runs smoothly and also calling different hospitals to chase up patients’ appointments or results. During my time here I have been promoted to Medical Secretary and Clinical Coder, these roles included audiotyping the GP’s dictations for the patients’ referral to the hospital and using an online booking system called ERS to book the patient in to the correct department in the correct hospital. I would also read incoming letters from different departments of hospitals, scan them on to the system and take the correct action from that letter (eg: forwarding it to the GP, Pharmacists or Admin staff or coding it on to the patients’ record).
