I ventured to Dublin, Ireland in 2007 to be closer to my now wife by attending the small film school, New Media Technology College. During the course I landed a two-week internship as video editor at The Digital Hub which immediately became a part time job on a large project, “Da Gist”, featuring teenagers from the inner city. The executive producer entrusted me with the abundant footage and granted near complete creative control to assemble four, news style programs to air on Irish television. It was a great project to complete and soon after getting married, we moved to New York where I attended Brooklyn College to pursue a career in media.
Before I could complete my second degree, WSJ Live hired me as Live Show Editor cutting content for all the live streaming shows. Less than a year into the role, I was reassigned to the control room due to a row between newsroom colleagues which shuffled positions in production. Gratitude quickly replaced my confusion as another career path opened. I learned most of the positions required for executing a live show, even becoming Audio Board Operator despite having no prior experience. Once comfortable with my many roles, I channeled my boredom during downtime between shows, and began researching and pitching ideas, soon finding myself co-producing my own segments. This resulted in numerous guests appearing in studio on live shows or shooting in the field and editing the final package to be posted on wsj.com. I scaled back these efforts, however, as I took the opportunity to become Show Director, leading the team of broadcast operators through four daily news programs.
I was later hired at Fox News and again took on numerous roles: Graphics and Playback Operator, Show Director, and Technical Director. Once again, there was a great amount of standby time and I added the role of Video Producer, reuniting with a former WSJ Live Executive Producer. I was overjoyed at the return to editing daily packages, producing, directing, and editing my own pitches. Momentum was building as I saw numerous videos posted to foxnews.com all while officially being a control room operator for the Fox Business Network. Unfortunately, a change in management and ultimately Covid ended this department. Walking empty office floors during those early pandemic days, I found a laptop I had used and downloaded 3D animation software, Blender and began teaching myself through architectural modeling and animating pet projects like a camp kitchen rig for my SUV.
I have delighted in my broadcast career; however, I have always returned to video editing and in the process, discovered the joy of producing. I seek a steady role in story telling through camera lens and shape the narrative in the editing process.
