The primary role of a retainer is to prevent teeth from shifting back to their pre-treatment positions. While orthodontic appliances like braces do an excellent job of moving your teeth into alignment, they do not provide long-term stability once they are removed. Your teeth’s new positions are only maintained if they are held in place during the initial adjustment period, which is where the retainer comes in.
