Volunteer care work is one of the most worthwhile activities you can get involved in, whether it is in a developed or a developing country. Throughout the world, there are vast numbers of children who are orphaned, neglected, or under-educated and in need of love, general care, and educational support. Care placements are a chance for volunteers on a college vacation, gap year, or career break to really make a difference to children who may otherwise have little or no mental stimulation in their lives. People are often unaware of the impact they can have on another person's life, with even the smallest gesture. What will volunteers do with Care? Care volunteers don’t need to be qualified or have previous experience. The only qualities that our volunteers need to possess are compassion for fellow human beings and a desire to improve the lives of those with domestic or physical circumstances less fortunate than their own. Although work varies depending on the institution where the volunteer is placed, typical examples of jobs and tasks can include assisting local staff in providing rehabilitation exercises and therapeutic treatments to children; entertaining/educating them with games, music, arts and other exercises; helping to develop fundraising initiatives to ensure ongoing funding for these institutions; and teaching English to local staff. It is important to note that a volunteer’s impact primarily depends on his or her initiative, motivation and willingness to be proactive. As such, different volunteers will have different experiences, even at the same project and so it is advisable that volunteers should not set their expectations too high. An active, creative, flexible, and open-minded attitude, coupled with goodwill and a warm heart, will allow you to make the best of your time here.

We are in the process of trying to reopen our store after severe flooding March 2020. We just put down a deposit to get our electrical panel repaired and are now working to raise funds to get our roof repaired so all of our new electrical isn't damaged from rains. We do have a contractors estimate for complete repairs of our building, but hope to at least get enough to get the roof done. We are hoping to get open by 10/31/2020 to be able to start generating revenue to re open our programs by 2021. We could use some help fundraising for this, OR,...if you know a roofer willing to help us out, that would be Amazing! Once we get our electrical power fixed, we'll also be looking for help cleaning, painting and getting donations organized - I'll post under another project for that. mahalo

Colobus Conservation is eager to contribute to the scientific knowledge of this unique habitat found in Dini, the primates, wildlife that depend on it and the conflicts and solutions we are using to allow the wildlife to continue to survive alongside the human population and development. We have a number of long term research projects that research interns are able to participate in, these include, but are not limited to behavioral, home range and habitat use studies of the wild primates, enrichment engagement of our captive monkeys and pre-release assessments. Research interns must have completed and graduated from an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, have some field experience and ideally will commit for a minimum of 3 or a maximum of 6-month duration, however, shorter terms may be possible for some projects. You will be assigned your research project prior to arrival and be provided with anticipated working hours and methodology. With prior discussion and agreement, it may also be possible for MSc level students to use the data they collect from a long term project towards their thesis. We strongly encourage independent researchers of all levels to use Colobus Conservation as a research base accessing a wide range of habituated primates as well as Colobus Conservation's knowledge, contacts and accommodation facilities. In order to begin this process, take a look at our website under the menu item 'Volunteers'. Below are some of the conservation research projects that may be of interest to you and are important for further development of our conservation activities which include, Primate Electrocution, Primate Pets, Primate Vehicle Collisions, Primate Welfare, Primate Pests Behavior, and Deforestation. If you have a different topic that is of interest to you, that is also fine. Please email us at enquiries@colobusconservation.org to discuss the way forward. Prior to beginning the research, you will need to obtain the relevant permits from the Government of Kenya. You should allow a minimum of three months for this process. Please ask us for details on how to obtain the necessary research permits. Undergraduates are also encouraged to conduct their final year thesis under the guidance of Colobus Conservation, but due to the time limitations usually experienced for this research (i.e. less than three months) and the level of input required from our staff members, they are requested to apply as Eco-volunteers. Colobus Conservation also has long term data and data from on-going studies. We would be interested in students analyzing this data for their degree program in a collaborative effort.
