My Dog Is My Home is seeking a Storytelling Coordinator to join our 100% volunteer staff. As storytelling is essential to MDIMH, the storytelling will develop concepts and work plans for My Dog Is My Home’s storytelling programming including developing films for MDIMH clients upon requests and working with the members of the Co-Sheltering Collaborative to create individual mini-docs about their programming. In collaboration with the My Dog is My Home’s Executive Director, Communications Coordinator and the Co-Sheltering Collaborative, the volunteer’s duties will include: identifying potential video interviewees, interviewing clients, coordinating film shoots; developing story scripts, transcribing interviews, filming and editing video or locating a free/low-cost videographer and film editor.
This position is great for someone who has a passion for social justice; loves creative problem solving; and cares about animal welfare, social issues related to people, and the human-animal bond. The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in a long-term (at least one year) commitment with My Dog is My Home and can contribute about 5-10 hours per week.
You are a highly motivated, creative individual with experience and a passion for connecting with people and empowering them to tell their stories. You care about social issues related to people and animals. You have excellent research, planning and people management skills and are able to express the organization’s views positively and creatively. You’re a passionate storyteller and you understand the importance of storytelling to create change and promote the organization.
Location: New York, Los Angeles, or Remote
Reports to: Executive Director
Take on a wide array of projects based on your interests and abilities and MDIMH’s needs. Sample projects/tasks include -
Creating one five minute video for each of the Co-Sheltering Collaborative members (total of 5 - 10 videos)
Creating an "about us" MDIMH video
Identifying opportunities for MDIMH to engage in film, photo, or written storytelling
Creating a plan for MDIMH to build out their storytelling programming
Maintaining a MDIMH photo and story library
Familiarity with impactful storytelling
Experience with filming, video editing, and film interviewing
Ability to work with others
Compassion, empathy, and dedication to social justice
Experience or interest in animal welfare
A great sense of humor!
Love of continuous learning
Clear and timely communication skills
Preferred, but not necessary
Experience in working with people experiencing homelessness
Familiarity with homeless service systems
Experience working with animals or animal welfare organizations
