Artificial tanning is a technique used to give skin a darker tone, simulating the effects of the sun. This technique is performed in specialized salons using equipment that emits synthetic ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can be classified into two categories: artificial light tanning and spray tanning. Artificial light tanning is performed in a tanning booth, where the client is exposed to lamps that emit UV radiation. This type of tanning can be done with or without eye protection, and when there is no protection, it can cause eye damage such as cataracts and retina degeneration. On the other hand, spray tanning is done by applying a tanning solution to the body by means of a spray. This solution contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a compound that reacts with the proteins in the skin and temporally darkens them. This type of tanning is less risky for health than artificial light tanning, but it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Both types of artificial tanning present risks to health, such as an increased risk of developing skin cancer, premature skin aging, eye damage, and allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important that people are aware of these risks before opting for this esthetic technique. It is recommended that people avoid artificial tanning and opt for the use of self-tanning products or natural tanning, which should be done with proper sun protection.
