To better understand what proofreading entails, one has to differentiate it from editing. Editing involves making changes and suggestions that improve the quality of a piece of writing. Proofreading finds and corrects errors in writing. It confines itself to correcting grammar, typos, syntax, spelling, style, capitalization, punctuation and format in order to bring clarity and uniformity to writing. It does not concern itself with how a piece of writing is structured nor its content. It is considered the final stage of the editorial cycle.
