Dr Andreas G. Orphanides is Professor of History, Archaeology and Anthropology and a former University Rector. His major areas of expertise in Higher Education are Policy Making, Quality Assurance and Accreditation, Leadership, Senior Management, and Anthropology/Archaeology/History.
He served and taught at universities and at other higher education institutions in USA, Greece and Cyprus. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History-Archaeology from the University of Athens, a M.A. degree in Classics and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University at Albany, NY, and postdoctoral qualification in ODL from Hellenic Open University.
He served as President (and formerly Vice President) of the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE) based in Brussels, and President and Vice President of the European Register of Quality Assurance (EQAR), which is the supreme body in Europe that evaluates and accredits the QA/Accreditation agencies of higher education in Europe. He participated for many years in the BFUG (Bologna Process). He played a key role as member of E4 Group in the development and implementation of quality assurance in higher education in Europe and in drafting the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in higher Education (ESG).
He was a leading person in the establishment of Open University of Cyprus, serving also on its first (founding) Governing Board, and of European University of Cyprus, serving also as its first (founding) Rector. He also served on the first Council of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, as well as on various ad hoc committees on higher education policy in Cyprus.
He authored/published a considerable number of books and articles/papers. He is also a music composer. He created five music CDs, and his compositions (symphonic and pop) were performed in Cyprus, Greece, Austria, Estonia, Armenia and USA.
Professor Orphanides was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) by ‘Ovidius’ University of Costanza, Romania in 2012, in 2014 he was honoured with the "Gold Medal" of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia “for his contribution to the modernization of higher education in Europe in general and in Armenia in particular”, and in 2016 he was honoured by the Polish Rectors Conference of Higher Education Institutions (KRZaSP).
