I first became interested in a career in writing when my mother used to bring home weekly sports magazines and without any time wasting, I would jump onto the football section. Then I had the opportunity to pursue my undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. During the span of three years, I learnt numerous things and also had some field experience through my internships. Working with Hindustan Times as a journalist in page 3 helped me cover all the events that were happening in the city, from attending the events personally to meeting and interviewing notable persons. Proofreading content that was to be published in the newspaper, to working on the stories that I covered on a daily basis. I levelled up in my next internship with Times of India, as I was covering the city wise news now. My story was about a theft in a café and in the medical shops adjacent to it that happened in the same night. I also covered stories of bus accident and a story of a hospital in which the ward boy had harassed a nurse in the hospital. Journalism doesn’t look as easy as it sounds to the layman. Speaking to the family who has just lost a kid in an accident just to get your bite for the report, might not be the most humane thing to do but it is a part of the job.
I feel I have a range of relevant skills that I can bring to your organization. My communication skills have greatly developed both through my work experience and because of my master’s degree in Digital media and Society at the University of Leicester. I just didn’t want to limit my education to reporting or writing. I wanted to know about other aspects of media as well. Choosing Digital Media and Society as my master’s degree was a step towards the future. Flashback to five years there was no concept of work from home or hybrid work but as time changed so does the working style. What I believe is slowly everything will move on to the new media and I certainly want to be a part of it. During my course I have not only written essays but also had the chance to do some presentations which has helped in my oral skills as well.
Having a small experience of brand promotion because of a yearly event called ‘brand aid’ in my college. Being the head of social media, I was basically in charge of what type of content was put on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat. Our brand was a chocolate and during the month-long event we did our brand's promotion all over the college through videos and we even launched a jingle. Being students of the media department, we used our skill of mass-communication to promote our brand and in the end won the first prize.
I regularly use Word, Excel, Premier Pro and also have done certificate courses in video editing, SEO, and journalism. As my CV illustrates, I lead a busy life through my various sports activities, which has meant that I have very quickly learnt the importance of time management. I have always handed my work in on time and never missed a deadline.
I have also worked as a social media manager in an internship and worked as a content writer for a tour and travel website. One of the most recent freelance works was as a sportswriter for a website called reporting sports. I enjoyed the work the most as sports is one of the things that I have been indulging in all my life. It was a fairly new website, so I was their main writer and used to cover all the main headlines in football.
During my master’s degree I also learnt a few tools such as NVIVO, SPSS and Voyant tools. With the help of my SEO course, I am also well versed with software’s like Screaming Frog SEO Spider and Site bulb.
Yours faithfully,
Arsalan Mohammad
