The United Nations in Mali
Jul 2019 – Jan 2021
Mopti & Gao
Strategic Communication & Public Information Officer
The United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was deployed in Mali in July 2013 to help government fight rebellion led by terrorist armed groups. The illegal armed groups waged a large-scale disinformation campaign among the public opinion nationwide against the presence of the United Nations. As a result, the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission found it difficult to gain endorsement or acceptance from public opinion. In January 2014, I joined the organization. One of my priority tasks was to develop and implement effective communication and outreach strategies engaging local and religious traditional chiefs, civil society organizations including youth and women, mainstream media, etc. At the same time, I contributed to the development of an integrated storytelling plan, thinking strategically about the roles of marketing communications: public relations, web site, collateral, advertising, and social media. By December 2014, I wrote more than 200 success stories showing case the peacekeeping activities of the United Nations. Issues of perception are important in Mali, since intercultural conflicts invariably involve confusions and distortions between fact and perception, especially between the majority population and minorities that feel themselves insufficiently recognized and integrated in the social fabric. A year later after I joined, the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission was gaining strong acceptance among local populations. As a result, the Mission has now been able to implement its various resolutions as defined by the United Nations Security Council.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme - UN-HABITAT, Democratic Republic of Congo
Jun 2018 – Jul 2019
Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo
Team Leader, Communications and Safeguard Measures Office
I joined the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at a critical moment when the donor community placed the agency under the ‘Performance Improvement Plan’ – PIP. More efforts were needed on implementation of the zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse, and fraud and corruption. Upon joining, I established a communication and staff engagement strategy to launch a campaign of zero tolerance for corruption and put such a campaign to good practical use. Six months later, confidence with donor community was quickly restored. As a result, more funds were secured to continue the implementation of land-use planning support to the government. Major achievements - Supervised overall strategic communications and outreach/public information efforts and activities to better explain the mandate of MINUSMA and reach key audiences and promoted overall key achievements of the Mission in image communications and multimedia technologies.
