I’m a graduating University of Glasgow MSc student in International Journalism, Media, and Communications and hold an undergraduate degree in English Cultural Studies and a Film Production diploma.
I was born in Belgium but grew up in the UAE, Egypt, and Canada. Since last year, I moved to the UK to complete my studies and settle in Edinburgh for the foreseeable future. Growing up in different countries and cultures has inspired an interest to seek out stories and learn about other communities, cultures, and experiences. I believe I fit the description of potential candidate for the position as I consider myself as a driven, dedicated, and passionate individual.
I am searching for a career that will allow me to have a creative outlet, as well as will mentally stimulate and challenge me. I believe that working in a newsroom will push me to find new and original stories and will challenge me to think outside of the box, as well as further enhance my writing skills.
My Cultural Studies and Communications degree at McGill University piqued my interest in both traditional culture, as well as popular culture. Through its lectures, I became fascinated with cultural phenomena such as ‘camp’, pastiche, and fan behaviour; as well as realized the importance of diversity and representation in film and media. While McGill mostly offered a theoretical approach to their curriculum, I was able to get a more hands-on and practical experience through film school, my MSc, and my extracurricular activities/internships.
I have previous experience working as an Executive Media Editor at The Bull and Bear, McGill University’s largest digital newspaper, and led a team of creatives, as well as worked closely with a team of other editors. This job opened my eyes to the thrill of working in the fast-paced environment of a newsroom that often requires quick problem-solving and inspired me to apply for jobs in which I similarly feel actively engaged and challenged. Through my position as Social Media Manager for Salman Sajun Studio, a design animation company, I realized my ability to have an eye for detail, as I was a continuity supervisor on the digital animation YouTube videos created for the Barbie x MEGA Construx series. Finally, through my experience as an assistant director, I realized my ability at taking the lead on tasks that require strong organizational and logistical skills, as well as time management skills, all which are necessary factors in the high pace environment of news journalism.
