About
I am currently an associate professor at the State University of Southwestern Bahia (UESB) and have a long-time experience in university (since 1999), teaching in undergraduate and graduate courses and having taken office in positions such as academic management and dean of teaching. I have maintained an active research program during my career, supervising twenty-two master’s degree thesis with four in progress and one postdoctoral conclusion also participating in masters and doctors’ qualification exams. Moreover, I have advised thesis in two masters graduate programs: PPGED/UESB (Graduate Program on Education) and PPGCA/UESB (Graduate Program on Environmental Science). I have collaborated with researchers from other Brazilian and the United States universities like the University of Iowa, Pernambuco Federal University, Bahia Federal University approving grants from national agencies like CAPES/Brazil (National Council for Improvement of High Education People) and CNPQ/Brazil (National Council of Scientific Research). I have responded to a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ between UESB and the University of Iowa (Iowa City, USA) since 2015 and approved grants to participate in activities at the College of Education in Iowa City and bring scholars from there to participate in conferences in our university. I have drafted books, chapters, and articles in Portuguese, French and English. Significantly, I would like to point out other editorial activities during my academic career. Firstly, as an ad hoc consultant of journals like Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos (since 2010), Revista Brasileira de Educação (since 2011), American Journal of Educational Research (since 2016), and Revista Meta-Avaliação (since 2020). Second, as an editorial member of the American Journal of Educational Research and Praxis Educacional. I also published - with graduate students and researchers - a joint University of Iowa in 2017 a special issue entitled: “Subjects, curriculum, and learning in a post-critical approach: some Brazilian studies on education”. For this purpose, I took office as a Guest Chief Editor of the American Journal of Educational Research. Intellectual autonomy is the challenge but the bridge to construct it is cooperation. My research has focused on circulating ideas discussing situations in schools and universities, curriculum, learning and interdisciplinary studies on environmental education. I drafted in my PhD thesis a dissertation in critical studies about circulating ideas based on a theory of imitation from French sociologist Gabriel Tarde. The study pursued the problem of ephemeral in Gilles Lipovetsky’s thought and the fleeting relation between the subjects and ideas, as well as the importance of Gabriel Tarde’s thought to study this issue, such as in the books “Les Lois de l’imitation” and “L’opinion et la foule.”. I still analyzed under this research the circulating of autobiographical ideas discussing teacher education texts published at the International Congress of Autobiographies’ yearbooks held in 2004, 2006 and 2008. I continued to study the relation between Tarde’s thoughts in a postdoctoral position at Bahia Federal University/Brazil in 2012 under the influence of contemporary critical thinkers like Eric Alliez, Laurant Muchielle, Bruno Latour and others. I then initiated to investigate the impact of Tarde on Gilles Deleuze’s ontology of difference, putting into question the circulating ideas of notions like the difference and or plurality and how these have become important to study on diversity and education. Currently, my research with CNPQ (National Council of Scientific Research) - Universal Grant MCTIC/CNPq Nº28/2018 - focuses on mapping the discursive matrices of the contemporary educational critique discussing the convergences between the notions of difference and plurality considering their origins in different philosophical traditions. I have concretely studied the concept of educational practices, taking theoretical contributions from Brazilian authors (e.g., Silvio Gallo, Alfredo Veiga Neto and others) and international thinkers like Gert Biesta and Michael Peters. I also have a project in progress studying the American sociologist John W. Meyer’s thinking about establishing a global common educational culture and the diffusion of knowledge and curriculum conceptions. Teaching a wide range of courses during my career at the State University of Southwestern Bahia (UESB) and other Universities have made me aware of the needs and interests of a culturally and ethnically diverse student body. I choose content and activities that are significant and challenging for the students to stimulate them to think about educational ideas and how these can answer situations from schools and other social institutions.
