My objective is to motivate my faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community and to develop their own learning interests and critical thinking to establish a learner-centered environment conducive to the needs of our present university wide environment. During my graduate career at Grambling State University and Public Policy Research at the University of Arkansas made me aware of the needs and interests of a culturally and ethnically diverse student body. As a result, I prepared policy initiatives considering the interconnection between the stakeholder’s own knowledge, culture and learning abilities, the subject matter discussed in classes and meetings, as well as current debates on social issues. I choose content and activities that are both significant and challenging for the stakeholders so that they are stimulated to think “beyond” their comfort zone and feel involved as “change makers.” Similarly, the activities and discussions I facilitated encouraged the stakeholders to make connections between their field of study and other disciplines. Collaborative learning is also central to my academic philosophy in order to promote reflective thinking and improve the students’ communicative and trans-cultural skills.
I believe that clear, open communication with stakeholders is key. Looking back at my learning experiences as a student, I greatly valued the supportive and caring environment that Grambling State University provided between professors and students. In my prospective career with Teaching Strategies, I look forward to working in a collaborative learning and teaching environment with both faculty and students, where I can develop courses incorporating innovative teaching techniques and the most recent theories and research through an interdisciplinary approach.
