I remember the first time I uttered a foreign word out loud. I was seven years old and my mother had just hired a private tutor to give me English lessons. At such a tender age, discovering a new language that was different from my own was a fascinating experience; I remember coming to school the next day and telling all my classmates that I had learned how to pronounce: "My name is Monica", which isn’t saying much considering I was about to delve into one of the most versatile languages in the world.
It is Shakespeare’s mother tongue, after all.
I never thought I would end up doing translations in my spare time. Throughout my high school and college years, I devoted myself arduously to translating academic texts that were not yet available in Spanish, and I distributed them gratuitously among my closest friends so that they could approach the work of great masters or academics who were almost unknown in my country. Even after getting a degree that would open doors for me in the world of Art History, I was so familiar with the “art” of translating that I ended up becoming passionate about this profession. After graduating, I was hired by a diplomatic servant of the South Korean Embassy who requested my services to instruct his young daughter -who could only speak Korean and English-. It was the first time I taught someone how to speak a language other than their own.
Since 2019 I have been working remotely with a company based in Miami, Florida (First Step Translations – 8581 NW 54th St, Doral, FL 33166), but due to circumstances beyond my control, I decided to take a different direction and make my own way, looking for a fresh start in the world of linguistics.
I have extensive experience in the field of legal translation (birth certificates, academic transcripts, divorce decrees, court records, etc.), as well as in the area of purely literary translation (novels and essays). I have also collaborated several times with the Spanish magazine Bienvenidos (www.bienvenidoscuba.es/revista/) as a translator and content writer.
I am proficient in the use of CAT tools and I have been trained for three years to translate large documents in record time.
